Unique contrasts characterise the region in northern Upper Bavaria: nature and culture, history and tradition, activities and relaxation. For centuries now hops has been grown and processed here. Hop growing in the Hallertau was first officially mentioned in records in 860 A.D. The “green Gold”, the hops, has characterised the countryside, the people and many customs and traditions, festivals, music as well as literature are also closely linked to hops. Culinary sensations can be experienced here all year round: in spring you can enjoy the tasty king of vegetables and buy freshly harvested asparagus from the fields nearly everywhere. In the summer you can feast your eyes on the impressively high hops gardens and your nose can look forward to that hoppy smell when the vines are in full splendour.
