Those aren’t bad views. Krün is situated in the heart of gently hilly mountainous meadows in the Karwendel region with stunning panoramic views of the Karwendel summit and the Wetterstein mountain range, steep snow-covered peaks with impressive rock formations. Best pre-requisites for beautiful winter hikes, especially as the paths around Krün are gently rolling and pretty open. The cross-country skiers, who can choose from many attractive cross-country skiing trails, can also enjoy these views. But let’s get back to hiking. A good possibility to relax and get to know this area is to walk from Krün to the idyllically located Barmsee. From the centre in Krün, where US President Barack Obama also felt very at home and enjoyed a hearty Bavarian snack in the beer garden at the G7 summit here, head west on the Krottenkopfstraße and then onto path 405 over the meadows until you get to the edge of the forest just before Finzbach.
Then the walk continues on the left through the forest until you reach the northern shore of the Barmsee. The path then continues south along the lakeside, then branches off to the right through the woods to the small neighbouring lake, Grubsee and then left until you reach the village of Barmsee. It’s definitely time for a break. The Gasthof Barmsee is an ideal location for this, a classic Bavarian restaurant with cosy charming small dining rooms decorated in classic Bavarian style and serving local cuisine.
The last part of the walk is then not really strenuous. Walk gently off to the left and a short stretch next to the Alpenstraße, then eastwards along the Kranzbach, then onto the Otenwanger Weg directly onto the Krottenkopfstraße and turn right into the centre of Krün.
Take the train or Flixbus from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and then catch the bus service (RVO 9608). To get to the Buckelwiese scenic path get off at the “Barmsee” stop.
