Winter in Upper Bavaria has many exciting facets: especially the combination of culture and wellness makes the large and small cities unique and liveable. Munich has got so many highlights from the Old and New Pinakothek (art galleries) to the German Museum and BMW World, offering a mixture of tradition and avant-garde. An insider’s tip for relaxing is the Müller’sche Volksbad with its charming art nouveau atmosphere.
Whoever arrives by plane in Munich has several options to choose from. Right next door the University town of Freising with its historic Marienplatz, Mariensäule (stone column) and the parish church of St. Georg. Weihenstephan, the Bavarian state brewery is definitely worth a visit, as the oldest brewery in the world has been around since 1040. Don’t miss out on a tour round the brewery and stop for a bite to eat in the Bräustüberl. Speaking of beer and culture, only a few kilometres away Erding entices you with its old town, city tower, gate tower (Schönem Turm) from the 15th century and the new gothic Schrannenhalle (market halls). The wheat beer brewery is very famous as well. Locals and visitors also love the thermal spa in Erding. The largest thermal spa is a huge theme park with 26 water slides and pools, saunas, as well as a tropical forest sauna and its own hotel, which with its extravagant rooms feels like being inside the warship HMS Victory.
The thermal spa is not the only superlative on offer in Upper Bavaria. It’s worth visiting Burghausen for a walk through the longest castle in the world, 1051 metres and the old town with its listed buildings. You can also relax in the Burghausen world of pools with its sport pools, steam baths and sauna area.
Heading back towards Munich there’s another real insider’s tip which is worth stopping off at. The former residence town of Neuburg an der Donau offers an unusually well-preserved old town ensemble with the majestic residential castle. And then it’s not really much further to Ingolstadt. The old town, ducal palace and the Audi forum with its modern architecture and historic cars are just some of the things worth seeing. To Wonnemar, the Danube thermal baths, it’s only a few steps from the town centre. Fürstenfeldbruck is also a not very well-known beauty just outside the gates of Munich. There’s lots of culture and history in the former monastery area with the magnificent Baroque monastery church, museum, galleries and theatre.
Der Winter in Oberbayern hat spannende Seiten: Gerade die Kombination aus Kultur und Wellness macht die großen und kleinen Metropolen einzigartig und lebenswert.
