Local car parkingReit im Winkl ranks among the best cross-country areas in Chiemgau and also in the whole of Upper Bavaria. The charming thing here is that it’s not only the numerous trails around the village with detours towards Kössen and Ruhpolding but there are also some real insider tips. One of them is definitely the panoramic trail on the Hemmersuppenalm. These high Alpine pastures at approximately 1,200m were previously overshadowed by the more famous neighbouring Winklmoosalm but have now been developed as a small winter sports paradise with cross-country trails, winter hiking paths and a sporty toboggan run. This insider status is also due to the fact that in winter it’s not that easy to reach. There’s a bus service from the hamlet, Blindau, which will take you up the steep road to the Hindenburg hut. And there, on the lower Hemmersuppenalm, the panoramic cross-country trail does great credit to its name. The nearly ten kilometre long circuit starts with a short incline and then leads into a wide circuit over open alpine meadows passing by old barns to the Upper Hemmersuppenalm and then swings round to the left with some bends leading it back to the Hindenburg hut.
There are lots of bends, easy inclines and descents on the trail as well as beautiful views towards the Chiemsee and the famous Watzmann mountains in the east. No traffic, no noise, just snow and nature; and naturally cross-country skiers and hikers enjoying this idyllic winter landscape too. This loipe has everything that cross-country skiers love: a beautiful landscape, stunning views, guaranteed snow at 1,200 to 1,250 m and also a cosy place to stop for a bite to eat at the finish. The Hindenburg hut is well-known for its good Bavarian cuisine and its sun terrace with a great view of Lake Chiemsee. And the bus will take you back down to the valley again. The road is really very steep and it’s a well-known and challenging toboggan run as well.
Take the train to Prien am Chiemsee. From there catch the bus to “Reit im Winkl Rathaus”. A local bus service will take you directly from the town hall in Reit im Winkl to the tourist information office in Blindau. The Hemmersuppenalm can then only be reached by a shuttle bus service (fee charged). This shuttle bus leaves several times a day from Blindau up to the Hindenburg hut (as required / depending on the weather) and then takes you back to the pick-up point again.
