A walk with unusual qualities and experiences which guarantees some "soul searching". One advantage of this walk is also that it is easy to get to by public transport. The start is next to the S-Bahn station in Erdweg. There cross over the Bahnhofstrasse, carry onto the Skulpturenweg and to the St. Peter and Paul Basilica, which was once a Benedictine monastery and dates back to the early 12th century. Then follow the signposts “InSichGehen” (soul-searching) and walk north past Eisenhofen and along the Happacher Straße over the flat fields. On the way there are many information points with objects such as a model of the solar system or a living sundial. At a track turn left and then head past a chapel until you reach the Happacher Höfen. Soon you will reach a small hill and you’ll recognise the church tower of Altomünster, the destination of this walk. Next stop is Kalvarienberg. The Kalvarien chapel from the late 17th century was built by the Brigittine Order. In the past the pilgrims were not allowed to walk on the “holy steps” leading up to the chapel. They had to overcome the steps kneeling down and praying. You can find out more about this at one of the listening points.
The last part towards Altomünster leads down the road Zum Kalvarienberg into the town. Via the Leopold-Schwaiger-Straße you’ll reach the monastery walls and arrive at the monastery area. Finally the path ends after the Finsteren Gang near the monastery church of St. Alto and St. Birgitta. The monastery is the last one of the Brigittine Order in Germany and was dissolved due to the lack of nuns in 2017. It goes back to a hermitage from the 8th century and was taken over and expanded by the order in the 15th century. You’ve reached the destination of the meditative walk. As a brewery traditionally belongs to the monastery it’s worthwhile making a detour to the local Kappler brewery. Then it’s not far to the Altomünster S-bahn station.
Take the S2 (from Erding towards Altomünster) and then get off at the ”Erdweg“ stop. The path begins there. To get back to your starting point take the S2 towards Erding.
There are car parking spaces available at the S-bahn station Altomünster as well as at the Erdweg.
