Castles and inns in the Inn valley

Oberaudorf circular route in the Chiemsee Alpenland

Oberaudorf has always been a really special place. This is demonstrated by the fact that many famous people have had their first or second home here from the industrial family Sachs to the former Bavarian Prime Minister Edmund Stoiber and even the football player Bastian Schweinsteiger. Oberaudorf is in a very appealing location at the bottom of the Hocheck Mountain with great views over to the Kaiser Mountains. This is also the quality of the circular route which is especially appealing in winter, when the Inn valley and the mountains are beautifully covered in snow. The relaxing tour starts with lots of sights and history at the tourist office next to the church and leads along the Oberfeldweg to the Kufsteiner Straße and then to the Schloßberg. There the path passes by the castle ruins of the Auerburg which just like many other castles in the Inn valley dates back to the early Middle Ages. Just before the ruins it’s worth making a detour to the right to the Seestraße to get a view of the Weber an der Wand, a curious historical guesthouse which was built directly into the rock face. But back to the Schloßberg. Carry on further east over the railway and motorway to the banks of the River Inn. The path accompanies the Inn downstream then crosses back over the motorway and the Auerbach stream at Reisach.

Carmelite monastery and inn

Here you can get a quick look at the monastery of the barefooted Carmelites and then stop for a bite to eat at the similarly famous Gasthaus Waller next door with its nostalgic cosy rooms. The circular path now runs gently uphill for a long time along the banks of the Auerbach until you reach the hamlet of Trissl and pass the clinic with the same name. At the edge of the village now head back towards the centre of the village past the bottom station of the Hocheck lift, which is a small ski resort, then past historical country houses worth seeing until you

reach the church in Oberaudorf. It’s also easy to get here by public transport by taking one of the Meridian trains via Rosenheim to Oberaudorf railway station.

How to get here by public transport

You can catch the (Meridian) train from Munich, Rosenheim and Kufstein to Oberaudorf station. From there take the Wendelstein Ringlinie bus service towards Birkenstein and then get off in the centre of Oberaudorf. The parish church is the starting point for this tour.
