Hiking on the sunny side of Garmisch

Above the clouds on the Wank

Fresh air guaranteed

If you’re looking for leisurely mountain walks with great views then the local mountain, the Wank, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is hard to beat. The roundish peak at 1,780 metres above sea level offers perfect views over to the higher and more famous mountains, the Alpspitze and the Zugspitze, as well as towards the Alpine foothills much further afield. You can also enjoy this in winter, even without a strenuous or sweaty climb by taking the cable car from Garmisch-Partenkirchen. In winter it’s better to check on the operating times in advance, as the cable car doesn’t run every day. The paths up on the Wank are usually prepared and cleared thus easy to walk on. However it’s still advisable to have appropriate footwear and don't forget to take your poles with you. Once you reach the top leave the top station then head towards the summit. The path leads you there in a few minutes on a wide and prepared path. At 1,780m high there is the mighty cross on the summit and next to it the Wank hostel from the Garmisch Alpine Club.

On clear days you can see as far as Munich

The view up here is very impressive, on clear days you can see as far as the lakes Ammersee and Starnberger See towards Munich. The circular route now loops northwards, then back to the top station and to the restaurant Sonnenalm and with a further loop southwards and to the Rosswank, where you’ve got an equally good view to the south and south-east towards the Wetterstein mountain range and over to their Tyrolean neighbours. The roughly three kilometre long circular route finally ends at the top station or at one of the two places to stop for a bite to eat. That could be the Wank house at the summit or the restaurant Sonnenalm directly at the top station. Then you can relax, take the cable car back down and enjoy the panoramic views of the Zugspitze and Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
