6 open-air museums for families in Upper Bavaria

Museums

A visit to the museum is a bad weather activity? Not necessarily. With rising temperatures and the anticipation of summer, people are increasingly drawn to the outdoors - and thanks to Upper Bavaria's open-air museums, those with a thirst for knowledge won't miss out either. Even for the little ones, the exhibitions perfectly combine educational content with outdoor time.

Outside in the museum

The next trip as a family should definitely take you to one of the many open-air museums that the Upper Bavarian regions have to offer. Below we present six museums where you can explore, discover and travel through time together.

Glentleiten Open-Air Museum - Discover an entire village

Immerse yourself in historic Upper Bavaria with your children: More than 60 houses and other rural buildings offer up-close insights into life in times gone by. Bee houses, stables and real herds of animals at various locations invite you to experience the traditional economy and work. The Glentleiten Open-Air Museum not only has a playground especially for children, but also two separate brochures, a marble run and a bowling alley as well as the "House to Discover", where they are encouraged to join in and try things out. There are also suitable guided tours and programs for school or birthday groups.

Holzknechtmuseum Ruhpolding - Time travel through the forestry industry

You can experience historical forestry work in the Chiemgau Alps in a multimedia and interactive way. In the Holzknechtmuseum with its 30,000 square meter outdoor area, you can experience the life of the lumberjacks. The barrier-free permanent exhibition and various special exhibitions provide information about the importance of nature for everyday life and the economy in the region. Of particular interest to children are the exhibited treasures of the past and educational films that tell of the adventures of the lumberjacks. There are also specific guided tours and workshops for school classes and families.

Amerang Farmhouse Museum - On the trail of rural coexistence

Enjoy the regional benefits between orchards and the picturesque surroundings in the Amerang Farmhouse Museum: you and your family can experience rural life and crafts in numerous buildings on the museum grounds. Between the various farmhouses and special demonstrations, you will get closer to the history of the region and revive traditions. This also brings families together: The farmhouse museum is a great place to learn together and pass on knowledge. This is possible in a playful way, for example, with the "Treasure Hunt around the Wagner House". The "Discovery Pass" is also a special offer for children.

Haus im Moos - Adventure trails through the Donaumoos

The Upper Bavarian Haus im Moos is characterized by original museum houses, several courtyards and the local history museum. In the middle of the Donaumoos, you can experience the historical everyday life of the inhabitants in various exhibitions and (children's) programs. There are various adventure trails on the large outdoor area, which are easily accessible and lead past sheep pastures, farm gardens and beehives. This makes environmental education a success and gives you and your children closer access to nature and culture. The annual museum festival and individually designed adventure days offer the perfect opportunity to get to know the Donaumoos.

Stöffling Celtic farmstead - Of Celts and Romans

History buffs and archaeology fans will get their money's worth at the estate in Stöffling. Historical finds from the region - from pottery to Celtic coins - led to the establishment of the Roman Museum and the Celtic farmstead. The reconstructed buildings and the exhibition of finds allow you and your family to relive the life of the Celtic tribes. The "Tree Trail to the Celtic Farmstead" invites you on an educational path through the cultural landscape and the "Children's Discovery Map" leads you through the grounds. In summer, the Roman Museum offers adventure afternoons where the whole family can learn about history at hands-on stations.
